Screen St Ives present the film "The Choral" which is set in a fictional Yorkshire town in 1916, The Choral follows a local choral society depleted by men leaving to fight in World War I. The ambitious committee hires the demanding Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) as the new chorus master. Despite suspicions about his time in Germany, Guthrie recruits local teenagers to fill the ranks. The group prepares for a performance of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, chosen because it wasn’t composed by a German. The film explores themes of community, resilience, and the power of music as the young men face impending conscription and the community grapples with wartime loss.
