Huntingdon Town Council is proud to announce that Huntingdon Crematorium has been awarded the Platinum Standard under the Greener Globe Funeral Standard, achieving an outstanding 97.1% score, the highest level of accreditation available. This remarkable accomplishment makes Huntingdon the first crematorium in the UK to reach Platinum status.
The Greener Globe Funeral Standard is a rigorous environmental framework that evaluates funeral sector organisations across areas including carbon reduction, energy use, biodiversity, water stewardship, waste management, and community impact. The Platinum award represents exemplary performance and a long‑term commitment to environmental responsibilityHuntingdon Crematorium was designed from the ground up with environmental responsibility at its core. Instead of traditional gas‑fired equipment, the facility operates using two state‑of‑the‑art electric cremators, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering emissions.
In addition, excess energy generated during the cremation process is efficiently recycled. This recovered heat is used to warm the crematorium building and the adjacent glasshouses, minimising energy waste and reducing the site’s overall carbon footprint.
These innovations, combined with sustainable landscaping, energy‑efficient systems, and ongoing environmental initiatives, contributed to the site’s outstanding performance under the Greener Globe assessment.
“We are incredibly proud to be the first crematorium in the country to achieve Platinum,” said Samantha Smith, Crematorium & Cemeteries Manager. “Our team has worked hard to create an environmentally responsible facility that serves the community with dignity while championing sustainable innovation.”
Huntingdon Town Council continues to invest in sustainable practices and aims to inspire other local authorities, service providers, and organisations across the UK to follow suit. The crematorium has recently launched a new Bluebell Funeral Service, offering simple, dignified funerals that are easy to arrange and fairly priced.
