FREE MOTORCYCLE TRAINING OFFERED TO HUNTINGDON RIDERS
Huntingdon motorcyclists are being offered the opportunity to improve their riding skills completely free of charge as part of a new road safety initiative taking place on Saturday 12 September 2026.
Peterborough & Cambridgeshire Advanced Motorcyclists (PECAM) has joined forces with The Huntingdon Freemen’s Trust and Cambridgeshire Police to offer 15 Huntingdon residents a free place on a specially developed RideSafe motorcycle training day.
And unusually, riders do not need to hold a full motorcycle licence to take part.
The course is open to anyone legally riding a motorcycle on a CBT, A1, A2 or full Category A licence, meaning riders on anything from a 125cc learner machine to the largest touring and sports motorcycles can participate.
Motorcyclists remain among the most vulnerable road users, and further rider training can make a significant contribution to improving skills, awareness and safety.
The RideSafe programme draws on the principles of Roadcraft – the Police Rider’s Handbook, the system of motorcycle control that underpins Police rider training and is also used as the basis for advanced riding programmes including BikeSafe, IAM RoadSmart and RoSPA.
The free one-day event combines three different elements of rider development.
Participants will begin with a classroom session delivered by Police motorcyclists and road collision specialists, looking at the realities of motorcycle accidents and how riders can reduce their risks.
They will then move onto practical slow-speed motorcycle handling, developing greater confidence and control of their own machine.
The final part of the day will put those skills into practice on the road, with every participant receiving an individual one-to-one coached ride with a nationally qualified IAM RoadSmart motorcycle Observer from PECAM.
Because the on-road element is individual, the coaching can be tailored to the rider’s experience, motorcycle and particular development needs.
A PECAM spokesperson said:
“One of the things we really wanted to achieve with RideSafe was to remove some of the barriers to further motorcycle training.
“You don’t need a big bike, you don’t need years of experience and you don’t need to be thinking about taking an advanced test. If you legally ride a motorcycle and would like to become a safer, smoother and more confident rider, this day is for you.
“Whether somebody has recently completed their CBT and rides a 125, has returned to motorcycling after many years away, or has been riding large motorcycles for decades, there is always something more we can learn.”
The initiative has been made possible through funding from The Huntingdon Freemen’s Trust, with support from Cambridgeshire Police and volunteer advanced rider coaches from PECAM.
There are 15 fully funded places available for the inaugural event, which will take place in Huntingdon on Saturday 12 September 2026.
Places are available exclusively to Huntingdon residents.
If the pilot proves successful, the organisers hope the RideSafe concept could subsequently be offered more widely across Cambridgeshire.
