We are deeply shocked by the events that took place on the train which made an emergency stop at Huntingdon Station on Saturday evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those injured, their families, and everyone affected by this tragic incident.
We extend our sincere thanks to the emergency services and rail staff for their swift and professional response. This includes the paramedics, local police officers, armed police, British Transport Police, air ambulance crews, and all others who acted with speed and courage to protect and assist those involved.
Ten people were taken to hospital by ambulance, and a further person self-presented later that evening. While nine were initially believed to have life-threatening injuries, following assessment and treatment, four have now been discharged. Two patients remain in a life-threatening condition.
The British Transport Police declared a major incident yesterday. Counter Terrorism Policing supported the initial stages of the investigation; however, at this time there is no indication that this was a terrorist incident. As investigations are ongoing, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the cause.
Huntingdon Station remains closed, though trains are currently passing through without stopping. The A1307 between Pathfinder Link Road and Brampton Road also remains closed, which may result in some delays to local journeys.
Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police is urged to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 and quoting reference 663 of 1 November.
Cllr Audrey McAdam, the Mayor of Huntingdon said “The events of Saturday evening have left our town deeply shaken, but they have also reminded us of the strength and compassion within our community. In moments of crisis, we see the very best of people; those who step forward to help, comfort, and support others. We are immensely grateful to the emergency services, rail staff, and members of the public who responded with such bravery and care.”At this time, we urge everyone to avoid speculation and to rely only on official updates from the police and emergency services. False information or rumours can cause unnecessary distress and division. Huntingdon has always been a welcoming and united community and it is vital that we continue to stand together in compassion and respect for one another.
