Our Charity of the Month for October is Godmanchester Miniature Railway

Our Charity of the Month is the Godmanchester Miniature Railway.

Just last year, Robert Schofield, the chairman of the Godmanchester Miniature Railway was dreaming about having a permanent site for his portable railway.   The Godmanchester Plant Nursery invited Robert to bring his portable railway to an event to cover for a last minute cancellation.  This proved to be a success and he returned to the nursery to take part in other events, and the idea of a permanent home for miniature railway was born.

Godmanchester had a long association with railways as there was a local station situated there from 1847 built for the former Huntingdon to St Ives line but was closed to passengers in 1959.  The new miniature railway is hoping to have a model Godmanchester station, a replica of the original one when construction of the line is completed.   Plans are currently with the Huntingdon District Council for approval.

The Godmanchester Plant Nursery, in Park Lane, Godmanchester, is a beautiful site and it's the perfect pairing of nature and railway. The whole thing kind of completes itself and adds a lot of things to do for children and adults alike. 

Once plans are approved, it is hoped that the railway would run during fair-weather events only, from 10am to 3pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

People in the area can get involved by becoming a volunteer on the project and are welcome to visit the site to learn more about railways and how they operate. The Godmanchester Miniature Railway is completely funding itself and wants to support other community projects in the future.

Events happening this October are Apple Day on Sat 10^th October open 10am-3pm and a Halloween Special open from 10am-2pm on Sat 31^st October.
