Our Charity of the Month for September is the Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve.
Holt Island is a 3.5 acre nature reserve close to the town centre owned and managed by Huntingdonshire District Council and supported by the Friends of Holt Island Nature Reserve, a registered charity. We are a voluntary group dedicated to the promotion, preservation and enhancement of this award-winning reserve.
The Island is full of interest. There is wet woodland, reed bed and osier (willow) plantation. Over 100 species of bird have been recorded, 20 species of mammal (including nine types of bat), dragonflies, damselflies and more. There are a wealth of interesting plants and many different types of fungi. There are information boards and a small hut with displays, and activities for children.
The Island is open from 10am – 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays between April and the end of October, subject to weather conditions and flooding (check our website for up-to-date information). A 520-metre boardwalk makes it accessible to prams, wheelchairs and other mobility aids, and dogs are welcome if they are on leads.
