Huntingdon Town Council is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Silver Award, marking its continued commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.
The announcement comes at the start of Armed Forces Week, providing an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the contribution of serving personnel, veterans, reservists, and military families within the town.
The ERS Silver Award is presented to organisations that demonstrate strong support for the Armed Forces Covenant, including actively supporting reservists, veterans, and their families, and promoting a forces‑friendly culture.
Huntingdon Town Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant on 21 April 2022 and has since worked to strengthen its support for the Armed Forces community, both as an employer and through its wider civic role. Achieving Silver status reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to embedding these principles into its day‑to‑day work and engagement with the local community.
As part of Armed Forces Week, the Council is also proudly flying the Armed Forces Day flag from Huntingdon Town Hall in recognition of those who serve or have served. In addition, Huntingdon Town Council is supporting the Armed Forces Day event at Sapley Park through the provision of equipment, helping to ensure the event remains accessible and enjoyable for the whole community.
Huntingdon also has a strong and longstanding relationship with the Armed Forces, particularly through its links with RAF Wyton and RAF Alconbury. These relationships are reflected in the granting of the Freedom of the Town, with RAF Alconbury exercising this right with a parade in 2023, and RAF Wyton marking 50 years since being granted the Freedom in 2025.
Cllr Karl Webb, Armed Forces Champion for Huntingdon Town Council, said:
“We are incredibly proud to achieve the Silver Award during Armed Forces Week. Huntingdon has strong and longstanding connections with the Armed Forces community, particularly with RAF Wyton and RAF Alconbury, and many residents have direct links through service or family. This recognition reflects our commitment to supporting those who serve, or have served, and ensuring they feel valued and supported within our community.”
Huntingdon Town Council will continue to build on this achievement, working with local partners and organisations to further strengthen its support for the Armed Forces community.
