Huntingdon Town Councillor receives Young Councillor of the Year Award 2026

Huntingdon Town Councillor Nathan Hunt has been recognised for his contributions to local democracy after receiving the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Association of Local Councils (CAPALC) Young Councillor of the Year Award 2026.

Cllr Hunt was first elected to Huntingdon Town Council for the Central Ward in July 2024 and was re-elected by residents to the Huntingdon East ward in the May 2026 local elections. While he also serves as a District Councillor, the CAPALC Young Councillor of the Year Award specifically recognises his work and contribution at town and parish council level.

He was nominated by fellow Huntingdon Town Councillor Freya Cushman, who currently serves as Deputy Mayor of Huntingdon and is the Council's youngest serving councillor. In her nomination, Cllr Cushman said:

“Nathan has been a proactive member of council, putting forward motions on progressive topics to include members of our community. Nathan has enabled the Progress Pride flag to be flown, as well as tabled a motion to place sanitary products in the Town Hall.”

The award was collected on Cllr Hunt's behalf at the CAPALC Awards ceremony on Friday 18th September by the Mayor of Huntingdon, Cllr Patrick Kadewere, and was formally presented to him at the Huntingdon Town Council meeting on Tuesday 22nd September.

Cllr Hunt said:

“I am honoured to receive this award and would like to thank CAPALC and Cllr Cushman for the nomination. One of my priorities as a councillor is ensuring that young people feel represented and encouraged to engage with local democracy. I hope this award highlights the important contribution that younger councillors can make to their communities, and I look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Huntingdon.”

The Mayor of Huntingdon, Cllr Patrick Kadewere, congratulated Cllr Hunt on the achievement:athan's award is thoroughly deserved and reflects the positive contribution he has made since joining Huntingdon Town Council. He and our other younger members have shown that age is no barrier to making a meaningful difference in the community, bringing enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and a genuine commitment to representing residents. We are proud to see his work recognised by CAPALC and hope his evement inspires other young people to consider getting involved in local government.”
